Performed by Glen Williamson (Member, Actors’ Equity Association)

Donations at the door.

A man and a devil will battle it out at Pishwanton as professional New York actor Glen Williamson performs Beat the Devil! Faust, the Whole Story. The Life Science Trust presents the Anthropos production of this one-man play about love, sex, murder, myth, magic, war, waves and a devil out of his depths.

Based on Goethe’s theatrical masterpiece, Beat the Devil!  will be showing on June 2nd 2012 at 4.30 pm. The production comes to the Edinburgh area after its well-received appearance off Broadway at the United Solo Theatre Festival in New York.

Through drama and masterful storytelling, Williamson transforms Goethe’s entire 24-hour-long, two-hundred-year-old classic drama into a 90-minute sometimes humorous and always exhilarating battle for the soul of a man searching for truth, satisfaction . . . and a Goddess.

“Faust is the old legend of the guy who sold his soul to the Devil. But Goethe gave the bargain some surprising twists!” Williamson says. “Beat the Devil! is astonishingly pertinent to our time and our struggle to be human.  It’s about a guy who craves knowledge, beauty and meaning.

But,” Williamson adds, “when the devil tries to satisfy that craving, he finds out that’s not so easy.”

A short preview of this production (also known as The Tragedy of Mephistopheles) can be seen on YouTube.

Glen Williamson, a founding member in New York City of The Actors’Ensemble and New Directions Theater, appeared in numerous productions with both companies, as well as with Walking the dog Theater.  He currently plays multiple roles in seven productions touring throughout North America and in Europe. His production company Anthropos (the Greek word for human being) seeks to uphold and celebrate what is truly human through the arts of theater and storytelling. Visit AnthroposTheater.com.

Funding for Fishermen’s Monument

We are most grateful to the East Lothian Civic Pride Fund for providing the first tranche of money required to refurbish the Fishermen’s Monument. We hope that the funding will all be in place this summer and that the work can be completed before next winter.

Need a patch to grow on?

Dunbar Shore and Harbour Neighbourhood Group are working together with the owners of the land along the Church Street Vennel and the local community to clear up the rubbish, overgrown tress and plants and to make use of this space as a garden.

The owners have been very positive about the idea of turning this site over to a Community Garden and are currently looking at the cost of repairing the wall and replacing the missing gate.

We are now looking for people who may be interested in using and caring for a garden once it is cleared.

Please let us know if you, or anyone you know are interested by calling Sue on 01368 862 552 or by email sue@sustainingdunbar.org.

Walk to School Next Week

It’s Walk to School Week in Dunbar next week (21-25 May) and once again we’re asking you all to make a special effort to come to school on foot, by bike or on scooters.

Children who are active on the way to school arrive fresh and ready to start their lessons, and fewer cars at the school gate make it safer for everyone. After the recent weather it’s easy to get out of the habit of walking or cycling, but please make a special effort next week to help us maintain our reputation as a super active school.

In Loco Parentis

The debut novel from Dunbar Noir.

Praise for the author:

‘Grim, but really good.’ Ian Rankin

‘A rare talent.’ Allan Guthrie

‘The real deal.’ Les Edgerton

‘A fantastic writer.’ Donald Ray Pollock

John Campion is the kind of teacher that any child would want for their class.

He’s also the kind of teacher that lots of mothers want to have. And some of them do.

His impulsive nature, dedication to his pupils and his love of women lead him into a chain of events that would cause even the most consummate professional to unravel.

“All on his own, Nigel Bird has created a new sub-genre: Teacher Noir. In Loco Parentis delves into the darkness of the everyday through the eyes of painfully human and delightfully contradictory characters. This is vulnerable, brave fiction.

Bird is a noir poet who crafts characters you will love, hate, and become addicted to–all at the same time. Be prepared: In Loco Parentis is a rare and devastating book.”
